.KEY MESSAGES...

- Blowing snow will continue to linger in the southern Red River
Valley, reducing visibility to 1/4 mile or less, particularly

Tuesday. The probability for advisory level impacts is 60
  percent.

.UPDATE...
Issued at 648 PM CDT Sun Mar 15 2026

Visibility in Whapeton is still down to a little over a mile,
and while web cams have improved, there are still areas of
lower vis with blowing and drifting snow. With winds still
gusting over 35 mph, will extend the winter weather advisory for
our southern counties a bit longer. Conditions should improve
later this evening as the pressure gradient finally starts to
relax.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 144 PM CDT Sun Mar 15 2026

...Synopsis...

Skies are clearing this afternoon across much of the region
with the main cloud shield associated with the winter storm over
the upper midwest still lingering in our southeastern zones.
Winds will remain gusty for the next 12 hours, so blowing snow
impacts may arise, particularly in the southern portions of the
area where the freshest snowpack is. Impacts should greatly
improve after 00z as gusts die down and sustained winds slowly
diminish. Cold temperatures will be left in its wake with
overnight lows falling below zero in some locations. We`ll see
another cold day tomorrow before we start to warm up with highs
in the single digits to teens.

The upper flow pattern will feature an anomalously large ridge
over the southwestern United States, bringing extreme heat to
the southwest and putting us in northwesterly flow aloft. There
will be a very fast moving shortwave that brings a nice swath of
warm air advection snow across the area. Generally the QPF
footprint is modest, generally a few tenths. The bulk of
precipitation appears to be on the cold side of the thermal
ridge so primarily snow will be the concern, although given the
close proximity of it some freezing rain may mix in. This
creates a roughly 60% chance for advisory impacts due to
freezing rain and snow.

The ridge continues to build through the remainder of the week
with the potential for temperatures to rise into the 60s by
Friday before we get another shot of precipitation. Overall,
expect a relatively quieter week with Tuesday being the main
risk for weather impacts.

.AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z TUESDAY/...
Issued at 648 PM CDT Sun Mar 15 2026

VFR condtiions at all of the TAF sites with most of the cloud
cover pulling off to the southeast. There is some stratus just
to the west of KDVL which could come in during the next few
hours, but is a mix of lower VFR and MVFR, so kept it 3500 ft
ceilings for now and will adjust if it gets lower than expected.
Winds will continue to gust above 25 kts in the Red River
Valley, and KFAR at times is still over 35 kts. North winds
will slowly diminish this evening, eventually settling down to
the 10 to 15 kt range late tonight. A few spots could gust again
over 20 kts tomorrow, but overall less windy than today.
